Frequently Asked Questions
The voting period is from 10 a.m. on October 19 until 8 p.m. on October 26, 2026.
Voters can use any internet connected computer, mobile device or telephone to cast their ballot. The voting website and telephone number will be printed on your Voter Information Letter. There is no paper ballot available for the 2026 election. Voter Assistance Centres will be open during the voting period to assist voters with adding or correcting their information on the Voters List and casting a ballot by internet. A list of Voter Assistance Centres will also be printed on the Voter Information Letter.
General eligibility requirements:
- Over 18 years of age
- A Canadian citizen
- Owner or tenant of land in the municipality
Unless otherwise legally prohibited from voting, the individual should be entitled to vote.
Public opportunities for Voter Assistance Centre employment, if available, will be advertised by the Town of Ajax on this webpage and on our social media channels.
Elections Ontario provides the preliminary voters’ list to the Town before the election. Not sure if you’re on the voters’ list? Check and update your municipal voter information at https://www.registertovoteon.ca/.
All eligible voters who are on the Voters’ List will receive a Voter Information Letter in early October containing all the information they need to cast their ballot.
As a general rule, if you are eligible to vote in a municipality, you are also eligible to run for office in the municipality. Certain persons are disqualified from being elected to municipal office:
- any person not eligible to vote in the municipality;
- an employee of a municipality, unless they take an unpaid leave of absence before being nominated, and resigns if elected to the office;
- a judge of any court;
- a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons;
- an inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment.
Nominations will be accepted during regular business hours beginning at 8:30 a.m. on May 1, 2026, and will close at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The fee is $200 for mayor, and $100 for all other races. The nomination fee is returned to all candidates once they have filed their financial statements after the election.
Yes, you can run in any ward, regardless of which ward you live in.
No, you can only run for one office at a time in Ontario municipal elections. You can change which office you want to run for up until 2 p.m. on August 21, 2026.
Yes, individuals can contribute up to $1,200 to a candidate’s campaign, to a maximum of $5,000 for all offices on that council or school board. Corporations and trade unions cannot contribute to candidate’s campaigns.
Election signs are permitted beginning on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
